About Us

Melissa Woolf and Andy Heger met on December 19, 2004.  Soon thereafter, Melissa let it slip that she had always dreamed about sailing around the world.

“Do you know how to sail?”  Andy asked.

“No, but I want to take lessons.”

“Well, I don’t really know much about it either. I went out a few times at summer camp and I liked it.  Why don’t you sign us up?”

And so Melissa enrolled them in Lido 1 class at Orange Coast College School of Sailing & Seamanship.  And they loved it.   After nearly 10 classes (including four levels of U.S. Sailing certification courses), they had pretty much exhausted the OCC curriculum.  By this point, they were fairly serious about bringing Melissa’s dream to fruition.

On Valentine’s Day 2006, they got engaged.  By now, talk of circumnavigating was serious.   But before they bought the boat and just “went for it,” they thought they needed some blue-water sailing experience.

After a down-and-back passage from Ft. Lauderdale to Bocas del Toro, Panama, with John Kretchsmer, they knew it was time to buy the boat and get going.

After a surprisingly short search, on July 24, 2006, Andy and Melissa closed escrow on a 2001 Tayana 48 that was to become Spectacle.   They will be moving out of their house in San Clemente, California, in September 2006 and will begin their journey aboard Spectacle in early December.
